It was still considered winter, but the sun was out, the wind was a more warm than cool breeze and Oded was enjoying it all as he sat in front of his store. Business was slow at the moment, most people having drifted off after Mardi Gras, others staying on for a bit. Tipping his chair back, he leaned against the building and closed his eyes.
( Jake stuffed a handful of peanuts into his mouth as he rounded the corner to see Oded blissfully unaware of his presence. )

Placing the mug before Maggie, a completley unmatched one to his own, Oded grinned as he sat opposite her. "Down here I've got... the chipped and mish-mosh, upstairs... Oh, sorry - didn't mention that either. I live above the store, saves on travel time. It's great when I'm too tired at the end of the day." Opening the tin of cookies, he put them in the middle of what passed for a table. "So Maggie, Jake tells me you'll be living down here now? We've corrupted you to the New Orleans way of life?"

Jake knew his action could be construed as desperate, but he couldn't help it. He loved his sister and loved having her stay while she visited but he needed Oded ... to touch and be touched by the man who featured in so many of his wet dreams. So while Maggie was out sight-seeing Jake made his way to Oded's store.
( The closer he got the more aware he was of his growing excitement and by the time he reached the door Jake had his jacket off to hold in front of his pants. )

Jake jiggled nervously from foot to foot while he waited for Maggie's cab to arrive. He gave Oded a small smile and tried to act casually as he wandered across the room to the balcony rail for the umpteenth time.

Oded shifted another box of obnoxious, gaudy t-shirts proclaiming where someone had been when they purchased it. Pulling the plastic bag from them, he placed them on top of the others; the rest would have to go into storage. Squatting low, he rubbed his neck and hefted the box. Oded couldn't help it, his thoughts kept drifting to Jake, all of them berating himself for pushing the younger man...
With his hands shoved in his pockets and a broad grin creating dimples in his cheeks, Jake arrived at the door of Oded's store. He could never resist a quick peek through the window first and as usual his heart missed beat when he saw Oded. Jake pushed the door open and leant against the door frame. "Hey," he said softly but with the smile still plastered across his face.

Slipping the keys to his car into his pocket, Oded looked up at Jake's balcony, and fought the urge to call out for Juliet. Pushing open the bottom door, Oded walked up the stairs and stopped before his date’s door. A quick knock is followed by nervous hands checking for wrinkles.
"Fuck," Jake cursed as he yet again messed up tying his tie. He stared at himself in the mirror and shook his head, klutz. Giving up on the tie he jogged down the stairs, took a breath and opened the door.

Oded pressed the speed dial button for Jake's number and listened to the soft ring in the background. He wanted to ask Jake out on a real date, not just a lunch - which was fantastic - but to Sinful Pleasures. He'd seen them advertised all over town, subtle, elegant; and they seemed exactly what he'd like for Jake. He'd gone so far as to check the place out, Oded did not want Jake feeling uncomfortable, and while the place was elegant, there was a cozy feeling to the individual booths. Oded was impressed how each had a separate opening and none faced each other. He wanted it to be a special night for Jake.
"Gotta go mom ... there's another call coming in," Jake said trying to get his mother off the phone. "... yeah I will ... bye mom." Jake quickly pressed the button and asked, "Hello?"

Jake wandered past the gift store for at least the twentieth time that week trying to get the courage up to go in. Do it you wuss ... he wants to see you, he said so. But actually opening the door seemed beyond him. Instead Jake stood outside the window pretending to look at various items when he was actually scanning the store for Oded.

Even before he opened his eyes Jake knew he'd over done things the night before. He felt vaguely sick but not enough for a dash to the bathroom, and his pulse pounded behind his eyelids. Without moving he filled his lungs with air and exhaled slowly then lay still trying to recall what had happened after his second jug of beer. Oded! The memory of the other man hit him and in the same instant he became very aware of the warm body next to him, their skin barely touching.

With empty glass held above his head Jake shimmied and danced his way back to the bar. The Bayou was in full Jazz Festival mode and Jake was making the most of it. He'd already managed to get a few free drinks from acquaintances, but he missed chatting to Viggo and even the cute girl who made the coffee seemed to have the night off. Almost at the bar he spotted a very familiar form ordering a drink and with just enough alcohol in his system to give him courage he said near Oded's ear, "I'll have a beer if you're buying."

He won't even remember you, Jake chided himself as he made his way into Oded's store, but it didn't stop the nervous butterflies as he pushed open the front door. He had planned to do a little innocent browsing, however, the sight of Oded chatting to a pretty young woman had Jake standing awkwardly scratching the heavy stubble on his cheek.

Stroking out the last crease in the flaming pink tourist nightmare of a shirt, Oded placed it atop the others - all with the typical "I went to New Orleans and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt".
Business had picked up steadily now that a lot of the rebuilding had started, tourists and imported construction workers and their families all wanted to enjoy the weekends, and invariable, they mostly flocked to Jackson Square. Having his store open again gave Oded a good feeling, he was once again in control of his future, his destination was ahead and he was headed right for it.
( Cut it out Jakey ... he's probably married with kids. )

Oded: Personal Journal and observations
He stood outside the restaurant, watching as Jake handled the many customers at that time of the day; all rushed for time - in a hurry to return to work. The quick smile, lowering of eyes as he wrote on his notepad, and Oded found he couldn't move. Jake had managed to snare him and he wasn't inclined to escape. He'd watched the young man for a while and decided it was time to learn more about him, maybe even follow the slender... no, not slender, toned younger man on his daily jaunts, find as much about him as he could. Oded knew he was hooked.
